Make the most of your next winter skiing holiday in New Zealand with luxury ski apartment accommodation. Finding a winter skiing destination in New Zealand is easy, with up to 17 commercially operated ski and snowboard areas available to snow lovers.

NZ's South Island is home to many well known fields such as Treble Cone, which boasts three main ski fields in Wanaka and Coronet Peak, which is located in Queenstown and also caters to night skiing. In the Central North Island, Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino are some of New Zealand's biggest and busiest fields. Renting a luxury apartment during your ski vacation provides many advantages compared to traditional hotel and motel rooms.

Check out a few of the major attractions listed below :

Fully Self Contained
Holiday with all the comforts of home. Full kitchen facilities and dining room furniture allows you and / or your group to cook and dine together without having to find a nearby restaurant or get organised to go to a motel or hotel's in-house restaurant.

Contemporary Indoor Living
As part of your accommodation, enjoy spacious living areas, balconies, fireplaces / central heating, separate bedrooms and extra storage areas for your snow gear. If you're going on holiday with your family, then you will appreciate the wider living space to relax after a day on the fields and the additional rooms for the kids to sleep in instead of having to use the couch as a pull out bed; as is the case in many motel and hotel rooms.

Peaceful Location
After being on the slopes all day escape the crowds and retire to your luxurious abode. Relax and unwind with comfortable furnishings and all the modern conveniences of a home. This style of luxury accommodation is excellent if you prefer a bit more privacy and seclusion from other guests. Most lodgings offer spectacular views of the surrounding alpine landscape.

Useful Facilities
Having access to an internal garage, laundry, drying room, storage racks for your ski gear and outdoor taps for cleaning your ski's, boards and boots, can be very helpful for couples and small groups after a full day on the snow. Many providers will also service your luxury apartment accommodation weekly if you plan to stay longer than seven days.

So when it comes time to planning your next winter skiing holiday in New Zealand consider the advantages of renting a fully self contained, contemporary and peaceful apartment with access to a range of useful facilities.

Ski Accommodations Wishing You Bon Appetit!

Swiss have a profound fervor for cooking. Their meticulous food preparation is an amalgamation of Italian, German, and French cuisines. An intermingling of culture fused with carefully selected ingredients, there is nothing to expect except excellent catering reflected on a rich platter.

Swiss feast on cheese as an element in the majority of their cuisine. Raclette is one of the most celebrated dishes by locals and tourists alike. Sausages are also a popular specialty. Bratwurst, Saucisson, Schüblig, Emmentalerli, and Wienerli are some of the variety to choose from. Wurstsalat is a famous dish that features sausage and cheese.

At the heart of St. Mortiz, Switzerland's winter wonderland adaptation, is a three-star hotel called Laudinella. The hotel features six restaurants that offer the finest Swiss cuisine as well as International. Hotel Hauser's restaurant also caters for the same categories. The hotel is rated three-star and is located at the foot of the Piz Bernina, St. Mortiz. These ski accommodations blended their panoramic scenery with the best dishes, a very good combination indeed. There are numerous ski accommodations in Switzerland making the most of this advantage, nature being on their side.

Austrian cuisine is usually mirrored with Viennese cuisine. The cause can be traced hundreds of years back when Austria was still known as the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Over the generations, Austrians have managed to innovate their cooking. They adopted other regions' influences and combined them altogether to concoct a very creative version that their culinary is renowned worldwide. Aside from the delightful Frankfurters and Wiener Schnitzels, Austrians gain most respect on their grandiose cakes and pastries. The preparation is complicated but is certain to satisfy even the most fastidious taste bud. Sachertorte is an Austrian treasure in an impression of a chocolate cake with apricot jam filling, a regional specialty created by the delicate hands of a Konditorei, a "cake specialist."

The selection of restaurants in Austria is extensive. There are restaurants in the ski resort, in ski accommodations, even on the pistes. If anything, Austrians love food and boast it evidently on the abundant restaurants in their territory.

The French cuisine started as a movement during the Middle Ages and has become a lifestyle through the centuries. The cuisine is distinguished for its intense diversity and style. The regions have their own individual specialty; however, the most distinguished features of French cuisine are wine and cheese. Champagne, for instance, is known for sparkling wine, named of course, after the region. Similar is the case of Burgundy and Bordeaux. The Loire Valley produces high quality goat cheese. Franche-Comté is known for its Epoisses cheese, while the Alpine regions offer a variety of cheese in Tomme, Reblochon, Vacherin, and Abondance.

Résidence Les Balcons de Belle Plagne highlights a restaurant named Le Chalet de Kanter Master, which serves the best of what France has to offer. Ski accommodations in France may be expensive, but the moment the food touches your tongue, you can never utter any more questions nor express any more doubt. The answer lies on your plate.

Ski Accommodation Only - Points to Ponder

'Ski accommodation only' is the self-catering aspect of apartments and chalets. These residences grant the client the liberty to settle in his own terms, an advantage for both parties. The landlords incur less cost while the occupants pay for the duration of their lodging only, which makes it practical and very economical.

The matter may be simple and straightforward, the abode plain and down-to-earth; but the real common denominator of catered services and ski accommodation only is to be able to give guests a decent place to reside, where they can make the most out of their vacation.

While there are a lot of apartments and chalets to choose from, the issue that must not be taken for granted is the rented house's accessibility to one's points of interest. It is good to ask yourself what you want to accomplish in this vacation. You want to have fun-that is an undeniable fact. How you are going to make that happen is the more politically correct concern that should be answered.

You are at a ski resort, might as well serve its purpose. If you really do not have any idea how to ski and want to learn it, find a ski instructor. Ask a staff member in your apartment if they have this service. Ski trails are varied, meaning the trails are ranging from easy to challenging. If you are in France, Espace Killy might be a bad choice. The region is notorious for its tricky slopes. Alpbach in Austria is the more appropriate ski trail for beginners and intermediates. It is important to learn about the snow and weather conditions of the ski resort prior to going there.

On the other hand, if you do not want to ski at all, perhaps the reason why you are there is to admire Europe covered in snow. Curiosity...it happens. Europe is a beautiful continent with a rich culture and marvellous historical places and structures. One thing is certain-it is excellent whatever state it is in, snow or without snow.

The attractions in Europe are overwhelming. There are numerous studios and chalets offering ski accommodation only. The key to find the one that suits you best is to know its proximity to the places you want to visit. Ski lifts are not bad transportation means. If you are feeling adventurous, ski lifts might give you an awesome experience. Choose a residence that has an easy access to one, better yet, choose one that provides a walking distance. St. Anton and Kitzbuhel in Austria are renowned for the medieval houses and also for the modern architecture. The restaurants and cafes are widespread. You can never go hungry in Austria. Zell am See is another resort in Austria popular for its charming scenery.

In France, a number of apartment complexes, such as the Résidence Le Valset in Val Thorens, are located at the entrance of the resort at Three Valleys. The landscape is panoramic and the apartment highlights a balcony. There are a lot of apartments and chalets in other parts of Europe that feature cosy ambience and picturesque backgrounds.

Less commercialized countries like Bulgaria, Germany, and Slovenia offer ski accommodation only rentals at a relatively more affordable price. There are so many things to discover in these countries and if budget is a restriction, these are the places that can give you the best accommodation you can afford.

Ski Hire Chatel

For years I have been running ski holidays in the beautiful alpine resort of Chatel. During this time, we have worked with a fantastic ski hire shop. For our clients, it is important that a ski shop offers good service, and makes the whole process of hiring skis or snowboards as effortless as possible. Of course good equipment and competitive prices are also of paramount importance. It is for all these reasons that we work with our preferred ski hire partner.

Enter the internet. Now holidaymakers, especially Brits, tend to cast around online before coming on holiday trying to get the best deals for everything. It is easy to become obsessed with squeezing every last euro off a deal, and easy to forget that something has got to give. That something tends to be levels of service, and quality of equipment.

Over the last couple of seasons, we have found increasing numbers of clients didn't wait until they got to Chatel and pre-book their equipment despite our advice not to. Consequently, they often don't get what their bargained for. The most frequent complaints from our clients who have pre-booked their ski equipment are;

1) That they were lead to believe that by paying in advance, they would have specific equipment put aside for them. On arrival at the shop, they found that they had to queue for a long time, and there was no equipment put aside for them.

2) Staff in the shops were surly and unhelpful, and were completely overwhelmed by the number of clients they had to serve.

3) The equipment offered to them wasn't of a particular high quality.

4) After sales service was pretty much nonexistent (no assistance with broken equipment or swapping skis.

5) The price (despite the large discounts promised online) wasn't really any different to walking in off the street.

We have worked with one ski shop in Chatel for the last 8 years, and there are a number of very good reasons why we carry on using them, and why our clients are always very happy with us for suggesting;

1) The service is fantastic - people are in and out very quickly even during the busy school holiday weekends.

2) The equipment is top quality.

3) The after sales service is second to none. For example, if a client doesn't ski for one day during their week's holiday, the shop won't charge them for this. Also, if a client wants to swap from skis to snowboard midway through the week, they do this at no extra charge.

4) The prices are some of the lowest in resort.

At some point in the future, the service and in-resort systems of ski shops will catch up with the technology. Until such time, if your ski chalet owner or tour operator recommends a ski hire shop for you, don't just dismiss it in favour of online booking, otherwise you may be disappointed.

Aside from having powdery snow, majestic scenery, and the charming ambiance, this perfect mountain town also plays host to a number of unique festivals and events that serve as added attraction to the hordes of tourists that gather in the area especially during the ski season.

Winter Dew Tour:

One of the resort hosts for the hugely successful Winter Dew Tour's debut season (2008-2009) which was held last December 2008 was Breckenridge. The resort was only the first of the three-stop event wherein the top athletes in the world of snowboard and free ski accumulate points during each stop to vie for the coveted Dew Cup and the $1.5 million that comes with the title at the end of the tour.

The Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships:

Every year, four-person teams from different parts of the world come to Breckenridge to churn out distinctive works of art from 12-foot tall, 20-ton blocks of man-made ice with only the use of chisels, saws, the occasional chicken wire, and lots of imagination and creativity.

Now on its 19th year, the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships is one of Breckenridge's certified attractions drawing crowds of more than 30,000 every year.

Breckenridge Festival of Film:

Ski Holidays 2010 - Book Early to Get the Best Deals

It has been a funny old year. Recession hit the UK, the pound crashed against the Euro, holidays in the Eurozone became a lot more expensive for Brits, and the Alps received some of the best snowfall for 25 years, with the season opening in style in November and continuing with fantastic conditions until the end of April. So a bit of a mixed bag for British skiers - great snow conditions vs expensive European holidays.

It wasn't all bad news however. The sheer number of catered chalets available coupled with a significant drop in clients booking early meant that there were a lot of amazing deals available as increasingly desperate chalet operators dropped their prices in an attempt to fill their beds.

With an uncertain climate still prevailing throughout the British Isles, and based on what happened last year, skiers would be forgiven for thinking that the best thing to do for 2009/2010 would be to wait until the last minute, and try and get a reduced deal. However, if you are serious about your skiing, that could prove to be a mistake.

Based on the poor performance of many chalets during the winter 08/09 season, many chalet operators have dramatically reduced the number of chalets they will be operating. In simple terms, this means that there won't be enough chalets to go around, especially during the peak weeks. Demand is predicted to massively outstrip supply which could result in price rises of between 10-30 % as the season approaches.

Because the news of these chalet cuts have yet to filter through to all the smaller chalet operators and owner run chalet operations, prices at the moment tend to be comparable with last year, or in some cases even cheaper. However, as the season approaches and it becomes clear that it is a seller's market, prices for remaining weeks and beds are predicted to rise sharply. At the moment, there are still some good deals to be found for next winter, even for the New Year and half term weeks. The shrewd skiers are booking now. Says Liz of independent ski holiday portal, All Mountain Holidays;

"Many people think that the thing to do this year is to book late. However, traffic on our site is currently high, and most of the quality chalets are already booked for Christmas, New Year and half term. For many chalet owners, Easter is also selling fast. I think it is going to come as quite a shock to people who leave it until the autumn to book a ski holiday during the school holidays - there will be very little availability, and what will be left will be phenomenally expensive. Even the non school holiday weeks are going to suffer price rises as the season approaches and availability becomes more limited."

In order to avoid disappointment next winter, if you can afford to, get a deposit down on your 2009/2010 ski holiday as soon as possible. If you leave it too late, you may find that there isn't much choice!

The Best Ski Resorts in Colorado

Denver area ski resorts are among some of the most popular ski resorts in the world. The most commonly heard-of are Vail and Aspen, but there are many more to choose from. It doesn't matter if you've never set used a set of skis before, or if you prefer snowboarding or hiking in the snow-there is something for everyone to enjoy at these wonderful resorts. That's why ski resorts are so popular for family vacations, as kids and adults alike can take skiing lesson together, go shopping, or dine at one of the world renown Denver restaurants.

If you aren't up for driving, or just want to relax and let someone else do the work-that's not a problem! Denver International Airport offers a shuttle service to and from most of the resorts in the area, as well as transportation to the city of Denver itself, where you can find an assortment of night clubs, bars, high-end and specialty shopping, museums, and even the famous Denver Zoo.

Aspen is one of the most widely known resort in Colorado. Aspen offers a variety of slopes ranging from very difficult to beginner, so there's no worrying about whether you'll find the thrilling or gentle experience you're looking for. Aspen is far from just a skiing resort, however. You'll find that it's a very popular host for weddings, banquets, and other special occasions.

If you're looking for the closest ski resort to Denver, that would be Loveland Area. It, too, offers a terrific variety of slopes suitable for all levels of experience, as well as a direct shuttle to the Denver airport.

Even if you are not into skiing, there are plenty of other things to do in the area such as hiking or just relaxing being surrounded by the beautiful scenery. If you prefer something a little more lively, then the town of Denver will undoubtedly provide everything that you want. So, if you are a non-skier in your group then there is really no need to feel left out.

Booking a stay at a ski resort can easily be done online or over the phone, however you're more likely to receive a discount or special deal if you book online. Bear in mind that the more notice you give when you book your stay, the cheaper it will be!

Benefits of Booking a Ski Trip in Christchurch & Staying at a Local Hotel

If you plan on going skiing for a weekend in the South Island of New Zealand you might like to consider going to Mt Hutt located at the foot of the Southern Alps around 2086m above sea level and approximately 90 minutes drive from Christchurch (Chch).

Mt Hutt is one of the many popular ski destinations in the South Island, along with Coronet Peak, Cadrona and The Remarkables near Queenstown. Flying to Chch is cheaper with flight prices as much as half the price when compared to Queenstown. Also with, Christchurch being the largest city in the South Island, it tends to have more flights scheduled, compared with the likes of flights to Queenstown ex Auckland, for example.

Flying to Chch is also a better option in terms of flight times, if you plan on going skiing for a weekend, as you could fly earlier in the morning and leave later in the day back to Auckland, thus giving you more time on the slopes.

You will need to take into consideration where you are going to stay. With so many options available including hotels, motels and self contained apartments, your choices are endless, here are some reasons why booking a hotel for your ski trip is a great idea:

- They are a more luxurious accommodation option and tend to offer services and facilities such as a Bar & Restaurant - which means you don't have to worry about cooking and cleaning up.

- Beauty Spa's - where you can get a massage, perfect for your weary muscles after a day up the mountain!

- And in many cases a heated pool and spa.

Of course each differs so it depends on what facilities or services you would like.

If you are taking the self drive option from Christchurch to Mt Hutt, you will pass through the town of Methven which is just 25 km's from Mt Hutt. Methven has a range of hotels which often have deals on offer where you can (for instance) get a ski & accommodation package at a discounted rate. This can save you money and time waiting up the mountain to buy your tickets. Also with Methven being close to Mt Hutt you don't have to worry about driving back to Chch, when you might be weary from your day.

If you are catching the daily Shuttle back to Christchurch it's a good idea to find an accommodation provider close to where you will get picked up and dropped off each day. This limits the amount of time you spend traveling to and from your destination. There are plenty of hotel accommodation options in Chch, some offering short stay rates in affiliation with some of the air lines.

If you are taking off on an unexpected weekend of skiing, a good option is to check out some of the last minute accommodation websites for deals on Christchurch hotel rates as many (in the normal course of business) do not sell all of their rooms and often have these on offer on last minute accommodation websites at a discounted rate of up to 60%. This is a great option if bad weather has been predicted too, as it provides you with the option of booking your accommodation at the very last minute.

This is a win-win situation as the providers gets to sell another room and you get a discount.

So, wherever you choose to stay on your Christchurch Ski holiday, you can be sure to find a hotel that lets you sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Discover Deer Valley Dining

Catering for one of the premium level ski resorts in the Wasatch region, Deer Valley restaurants are renowned for their quality. This is true of both service and food, as they cater for a more discerning palette, used to the delights of fine dining, and exclusivity. Such an approach settles well with the upmarket focus of the resort, offering such luxury service as ski valets and shopping boutiques.

Within the resort itself, there is a selection of three fine dining restaurants to choose from. The most respected of these is the Mariposa, which has won several top awards, and is often named as one of the best restaurants to visit in the skiing world. Only open throughout the ski season, patrons are able to enjoy both contemporary and classical dishes. Also offered are signature tasting menus, allowing the kitchen team to showcase all that is best about them. With attentive staff, exuding comprehensive knowledge about the food and its provenance, you are assured a memorable experience.

No fine dining collection would be complete without a seafood representative in the stable. And Deer Valley resorts Seafood Buffet delivers here. With a focus on presenting diners with only the best quality food available, they are committed to sourcing sustainable stocks wherever possible. Offering a more relaxed atmosphere than some fine dining restaurants afford, guests from the local area vote this as one of their favorite restaurants.

Ending the list with a flourish is the Fireside Dining restaurant, that delivers Alpine charm, and introduces a novel concept to dining that is fun. Diners are invited to explore the delights on offer, with a tour around four fireplaces. The first offers tempting appetizers including homemade breads, cheeses and chutneys. The second and third fireplaces, present Swiss inspired main courses, with succulent meat dishes, game, poultry and authentic vegetarian options. At the final fireplace, you are invited to select from a tempting range of desserts to finish the meal and partake in the bar offerings.

Whilst the restaurants within the resort are popular, and worthy of attention, it is wise not to ignore other restaurants in the surrounding area.

First amongst these is the amazingly popular Goldener Hirsch Inn. The winner of many awards, and often booked up for extended periods of time, diners will receive service that is parallel to that offered in the resort.

Other Deer Valley restaurants to consider if vacationing in the area include The Glitretind, and the Stew Pot. The Gliterand provides an exceptional regional experience, whilst the Stew Pot provides a homely, more traditional approach. Again, these restaurants are open year round, and are worth visiting during the summer, to take in the breathtaking views.

If you are lucky enough to be vacationing in Deer Valley this ski season, you are sure to not be disappointed, with high quality restaurants at every turn. However, be sure to check out those restaurants away from the resort, particularly if you intend visiting throughout the summer.

Sun Peaks Icewine Festival - A Wine Masters Dream

How Does Icewine Differ From Other Wines?

Icewine is unique from other wines and spirits not only in taste, but also in its process of manufacture. The grapes in icewine are frozen on the vine in a temperature of approximately -8 degrees Celsius (17 °F) for about 36 hours before they are harvested and fermented. This is a very sensitive step in the production of icewine; if the grapes do not freeze fast enough, they could decompose. However, if the grapes become too frozen, juice cannot be extracted.

The renowned sweetness of the wine is dependent on the freezing process of the grapes. If executed correctly, the sugars and other dissolved solids in the grapes do not freeze, but the water does; this results in a more concentrated and sweeter tasting wine. Since the process of production is extremely complicated and laborious, icewine takes longer to manufacture, is more expensive and sold in smaller amounts than regular table wine.

Sun Peaks Icewine Festival

Sun Peaks Resort has hosted the Icewine Festival annually since 1998. Held typically in January, this 5 day affair was developed to attract guests to the resort after the holiday period. Since the beginning, the festival has proved to be a remarkable success attracting crowds of enthusiastic wine tasters and connoisseurs each year.

Since the event platforms icewines from the BC's top Okanagan wineries, it provides an excellent opportunity for local wineries to introduce their product and promote their business. Dairy Farmers of Canada are also often present at the wine festival hosting some of their own events. Guests can indulge in a variety of Aged Goudas, Blue Cheese and more while strolling throughout Sun Peaks village tasting icewine and other treats.

Past Icewine Festival agendas have included events such as:

  • Sun Peaks Wine & Dine
  • Taste of Sun Peaks
  • Al You Need is Cheese... for Dessert
  • Icewine & Nothing More
  • Sinful Chocolate & Heavenly Wine
  • Taste the Aromas of Coffee & Wine with Starbucks
  • The Sun Peaks Progressive Tasting
  • Medal Winners Tasting
